Why Marketing is Important to You
As we have defined it, marketing is the process of uncovering and fulfilling customer
needs. Marketing is no longer about selling to customers, but empowering customers.
Formulating and executing an effective plan to achieve your organization’s goals
can be difficult in the face of so much change. How do you know where to start,
where to focus, and how to choose from the many options? These are exactly the answers
a sound marketing plan can provide, and why it is so important and valuable.
How to Build a Marketing Plan
Set Goals
The first step is to outline your goals. Your organization’s goals should align
with the overall mission and objectives of your company. It is very important that
goals be SMART – specific, measurable, achievable, realistic
and time-based. Setting good goals takes thought. Concentrate on 3-5 major
goals, otherwise you may risk diluting your focus and not achieving any.
Identify Solutions
Identify and evaluate potential solutions that will achieve your goals. Using the
traditional four P’s of marketing and establishing a dialog with your customers
will help you quantify solutions with actionable objectives.
The 4 P’s of Marketing
Marketers use the "marketing mix" or 4 P’s of marketing: Product, Price, Place,
and Promotion to organize the ingredients of their marketing plan.
The 4 P’s are essential components of a sound marketing plan:
- Product - refers to both physical products and services
- Price - requires knowledge of costs, profit margins, and competitors
